Tokyo, Japan

26th February 2017

The Tokyo Marathon is one of the World Marathon Majors (as of 2012). It is a massive race (attracting 35,000 runners in 2019 - there were over 300,000 ballot applications), and was one of the initial contingent of races to be awarded the World Athletics Platinum Label.

The race is organised by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation that seek to promote running within the city alongside various initiatives that contribute to society. Their slogan is to “change the future, through the joy of running”.

The race has been taking place since 2007. As the race welcomes participants of any gender it replaced other events that had been taking place in the city including the Tokyo International Women's Marathon. It has developed and grown over the years initially earning a World Athletics Label in 2008.

It takes place in Tokyo, Japan at the end of February/beginning of March. That said, the 2021 event is scheduled for October to allow more time for the world to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2020 the race was run with only an elite field due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tokyo is Japan's capital city. It is an extremely busy city with a lot of things to do. It is an extremely modern, developed city but there is still an abundance of Japanese history and culture available to explore for the interested visitor.
